Land O' Lakes Gives Back to the Community

At each Land O' Lakes Quilt Guild meeting, one of the first things you will see is a long table piled with quilt kits, fabric bundles, quilt tops, and finished quilts. These piles change from month to month as our members select some of these items to continue the process of making them into finished quilts. The finished quilts are then donated to one of two organizations.

Friends of the Family was founded in 1980 to supply compassionate and supportive services to families or individuals who find themselves in abusive situations. Over the years, the organization has grown to a staff of 50, hundreds of volunteers, a 4,400 square foot shelter, and a thrift store. Our Guild collects toiletry items and quilts that are given to individuals who have sought help. Many times they come to the shelter with nothing. Our donations of shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, diapers and other items are needed and appreciated. We do our best to keep their pantry stocked with everyday items and quilts for the children who may have been forced to leave home without their favorite security blanket.

Our second charity that we support is Meals on Wheels. Most people recognize this organization for supplying the elderly with a hot meal each day. The volunteers who distribute the meals are also the eyes and ears of the elderly in Denton county. They check on the well-being and needs of their clients. Many times, these elderly clients have no family or friends to visit them on a regular basis. The daily visit from a MOW volunteer may be their only social contact for days or weeks at a time. Our Guild provides lap and throw size quilts to be given to these seniors who are often forgotten. The quilt provides warmth and the jester lets them know that they are not forgotten.
